Match Report

GOING into the last two minutes of their previous two matches, Dumbarton have been in a position to take four points.

They have ended up with one.

Which is better than nothing, but is also part of the frustration of struggling at the wrong end of League One.

With their home game against Montrose still goalless with seven minutes remaining, they suddenly went on course to take all three.

Boris Melingui was the man who buried them at Brechin in August. Five months later, he looked like being the player who had won it for Sons against the Gable Endies in a trial match.

Five minutes later, though, a moment of slackness at the back resulted in the concession of a penalty, which Martin Rennie stuck away for Montrose.

Promising signs were once again there. But the last time Dumbarton won a match, Melingui was playing for the opposition. All of eight weeks prior to this game.

Games are not exactly on the verge of running out altogether, but the last quarter of the season is on the horizon and promising signs would gladly be traded for results.

The first half was one of poor fare. The visitors' Andrew Steeves forced returning keeper Grant Adam into a save with his legs midway through it.

Sons' closest call was right at the end of the half when a Bobby Barr cross was just too high for Melingui to reach.

Montrose would have felt they should have taken the lead early in the second half. Adam saved well from Euan Henderson only for the ball to head in Rennie's direction, but he missed his header at close range.

Soon afterwards, Stuart Carswell denied Henderson with a great challenge, before Adam saved again, this time from Graham Webster.

He then had to go off injured, but no sooner had Chris Smith replaced him than Sons were ahead.

Ross Forbes' free kick found Melingui 15 yards out, and his header was outwith the keeper's reach.

The minutes ticked by, but Sons couldn't see them all out without conceding the penalty, with the foul committed by Smith, and then the equaliser.

And that was it, really.
