Match Report

POINTS are given out for who puts the ball in the net the more times. No ifs, no buts, end of story.

Ross Forbes' opening goal should have had a better place than a mere consolation in defeat for Dumbarton.

And if games lasted 88 minutes, Sons would have claimed a point which they could argue they deserved.

It was what happened in the final 120 seconds that was their undoing.

Forbes' goal was added to by Michael Paton after his stunning effort was cancelled out by Danny Armstrong.

But Kevin Nisbet levelled for Raith a second time and in the final minutes, pressure by the home side without many clearcut chances eventually told when Euan Murray and Lewis Vaughan got them all three points.

Dumbarton were ahead for a total of 46 minutes in this game. Raith led for two. But it was the Kirkcaldy side who prevailed.

It was also Sons' sixth away game this season in a winning position. They have taken four points from those – three at East Fife and one at Airdrie. Fourteen points on the floor.

It was a moment of sheer class from Forbes which opened the scoring in nine minutes. Having intercepted a slack Raith pass mere yards inside their half, he barely even paused to think about sending in a shot which had the keeper beaten, even from that distance.

That goal deserved to be the one keeping Dumbarton in front for longer than three minutes. Unfortunately that's all it got, as Nisbet swung in a cross from the left and Armstrong headed home.

After the keepers saved from Dom Thomas, and then Armstrong with another effort, Sons regained control with a goal scored from somewhat closer range.

Cammy Ballantyne played a low ball across goal and a player who was later established to the fans behind the opposite goal as Michael Paton touched it home.

Liam Buchanan and then Nisbet missed the target with headers for Raith, but despite the pressure from the home side, Dumbarton were holding out, and did so in the early second half as well.

That was until the 62nd minute when Nisbet met a low ball in from the left and, although not with an entirely clean touch, bundled it home.

Soon after, Jamie McGowan saved well from Buchanan before Calum Gallagher's shot flew over. With time running out, a free kick by Thomas was saved low by the keeper.

A share of the points looked likely if Dumbarton could show sufficient resistance. They managed it until the third-from-last minute when Murray met a free kick at the back post and hooked it home.

Then in the penultimate minute, Vaughan ran through on goal and applied an angled finish.

Sons can argue that they deserved more, but you don't get points for what you deserve.

You get them for what you actually do.
