Superb strikes from Josiah Sowa and Owen Hartington, and a second in as many games from Deryn Lang saw Dumbarton record back-to-back victories for the first time this season against Kilmarnock B.

A low key first-half saw Logan Foster’s goal separate the sides, with Leighton McIntosh seeing a penalty saved by Jamie Morrison.

However, following a tactical tweak at half-time, Sons dominated the second-half to secure a first three points of the season in the KDM Evolution Trophy.

With Ali Omar on international duty, Tommy Robson injured and Tom Lang not risked after his first 90 minutes in six months, boss Frank McKeown rang the changes for the visit of Kris Doolan’s youngsters.

Kristian Webster, Owen Hartington, Ally Spalding and Connor Campbell all came into the side - with Lewis Spence returning to a matchday squad for the first time since early July.

The opening exchanges saw chances at both ends, which set the tone for an end-to-end encounter.

Noah Simpson couldn’t quite find Remo Margiotta with his cutback from a good position for the visitors, whilst Connor Campbell’s clever ball forward sent Leighton McIntosh racing clear - with the forward clipping over the advancing Morrison in the away goal, but seeing the danger cleared.

Killie dangerman Margiotta threatened again almost immediately, rifling into the side-netting from a good position in the box - before Robbie Cleary set off on a trademark driving run and saw his goalbound effort blocked.

After some brave Leighton McIntosh defending had denied Noah Simpson from inside the six yard box, the chances began to fizzle out - with both sides enjoying plenty of the ball. But neither keeper called into serious action.

Deryn Lang went close for Sons 10 minutes before the break, sharply swivelling in the box before flashing a drive narrowly over the bar. However it would be the Ayrshire side who would take the lead before half-time.

A deep free-kick found Logan Foster at the far post, and the midfielder’s cushioned volley flew into the net from point-blank range.

Dumbarton almost found the perfect response.

Robbie Cleary’s free-kick found Leighton McIntosh who was downed by a clumsy Jamie Morrison challenge for a penalty. However the Killie keeper redeemed himself by blocking McIntosh’s effort with his feet.

That would be the forward’s final act of the game as boss McKeown made a double change at half-time, with Josiah Sowa and Kai Kirkpatrick replacing McIntosh and Ally Spalding.

And the switch had an almost instant impact.

Good play down the left from Scott Honeyman saw the forward outmuscle a defender and curl in a cross that was touched into the net by Deryn Lang.

Honeyman was at the heart of everything for Sons, finding no takers for his tempting ball across the face of goal - before stinging Morrison’s palms with a 25 yard drive.

It felt like a second Dumbarton goal was coming, and it arrived in real style just after the hour mark.

Josiah Sowa picked up Connor Campbell’s pass on the left wing and turned on the afterburners to surge beyond four defenders - before arrowing a spectacular effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Margiotta passed up a great chance to draw Killie level as he snatched at a free-header from eight yards, before two superb stops from the impressive Morrison denied Scott Honeyman and Deryn Lang.

The keeper couldn’t do anything to prevent Sons adding a killer third with 14 minutes remaining however.

Scott Honeyman was crudely upended on the edge of the area, with Celtic loanee Owen Hartington stepping up to pick out the top corner from the resulting free-kick - for his first senior goal.

There was still time for more drama however, as Killie won a penalty of their own for a trip on the edge of the area - with Margiotta calmly sending Mason Munn the wrong way from the spot.

However it was Sons who ended on the front foot.

First, aggressive play from the returning Lewis Spence created a chance for the driving Hartington - but he could only fire straight at Morrison.

Scott Tomlinson’s surging run then carved open the tiring away defence, but the substitute again found Morrison in his way - as Sons had to settle for a one-goal winning margin
