Match Report

Dumbarton suffered their first league defeat of the season with a 2-0 loss at Elgin City.

Goals in either half from Connall Ewan and Liam Harvey was enough for the home side to secure their first three points of the season.

Boss Stevie Farrell made six changes to the side that was knocked out of the SPFL Trust Trophy by Kelty Hearts the week prior with Brett Long, Greig Young, Blair Malcolm, Finlay Gray, James Hilton and Ross MacLean all recalled to the starting eleven.

Clear cut chances were few and far between throughout the afternoon at Borough Briggs with Carlo Pignatiello’s low strike spilled by Tom McHale before he gathered the loose ball and MacLean found a yard to get a shot away in a central position 18-yards from goal but he was off target in the opening quarter of an hour.

Shortly after the half-hour, a short corner routine from Sons created an opening for Gray but his volley was deflected wide and a dangerous low cross from Ryan Blair fizzed across goal but unfortunately there was no takers before Hilton was sent through on goal but failed to test McHale.

The home side took the lead on 36 minutes from a set piece as Ewan rose highest at the back post to bounce a header past Long and into the net.

Ryan MacLeman then had an opportunity for City as they looked to double the margin, he cut in from the right and looked for the far corner but it was well pushed away by Long.

Dumbarton started the second-half brightly with Matty Shiels getting on the end of a couple of corners but one header was glanced wide and another goal bound effort was cleared away.

Faz opted to make a couple of changes on the hour mark with Michael Ruth and Kalvin Orsi replacing Hilton and Blair, and there was nearly an immediate impact from Ruth as he was just off target after good work from MacLean.

City doubled their lead on 64 minutes through a terrific strike from Harvey as he rifled the ball into the too corner from the edge of the area.

There were still chances for Sons as they looked to get back into the game but Orsi fired over at the back post after getting on the end of Young’s cross and Ruth did well once again to create space for a shot and, whilst he found space for a shot on this occassion, it was right at the goalkeeper.

Dumbarton failed to set up a grandstand finish in the final quarter of an hour and will look to get back on track when Peterhead visit the Rock next weekend.
