Match Report

Dumbarton conceded late on to lose at Elgin City on Saturday.

An injury-time header from Ross Draper, who is also currently the caretaker boss at the Borough Briggs outfit, earned the home side all three points in a result that secures City’s status in League Two for another season.

Boss Stevie Farrell rung the changes for his side with their spot in second place secured, and perhaps one eye on the play-offs which get under way next week.

Goalkeeper Harry Broun was handed his first league start of the season with Stuart Carswell also starting for the first time in over a month and Ally Love in from the off.

Ryan Blair had the first opportunity of the game on 12 minutes when he met Aron Lynas’ deep cross towards the back post, but his volley bounced wide of the target.

Love then got in behind the Elgin defence ten minutes later and advanced towards goal from the left with his powerful effort across goal well kept out by Tom McHale.

For the home side, Owen Cairns and Kane Hester led a quick break away and combined well to create an opening but Broun stood up well to deny Cairns.

A few minutes before the interval, Blair had a shot from long range deflected into McHale’s hands and he immediately went long with a kick forward to Hester but Broun was off his line sharply to punch the ball away.

On the hour, Farrell introduced Finlay Gray, Joe McKee and Russell McLean to the action, replacing David Wilson, Declan Byrne and Carswell.

The best opportunity of the game came midway through the second-half when Love was sent through on goal, but he couldn’t quite get the ball to settle down on the ground and he put his effort over the bar.

Edin Lynch and Gregg Wylde replaced Aron Lynas and Martin McNiff on 72 minutes as Faz looked to get minutes into players returning from injury ahead of the play-offs.

Gray used his electric pace to get away from his man on 90 minutes and burst towards goal but the angle was slightly against him when he went to pull the trigger and whilst his effort may have nestled into the far corner, McHale got a hand on his shot to prevent that from happening.

Elgin were awarded a cheap free-kick in a wide position with time just about up and they made the most of it, with Draper heading in from Russell Dingwall’s delivery with results elsewhere ensuring they will be playing League Two football next season.

There is one more league fixture for Dumbarton to contend before the play-offs start next Tuesday with Sons opponents still to be confirmed as either Annan Athletic or East Fife could finish the season in third place.

Attention for Farrell’s troops in the meantime turns to Saturday’s game with Stranraer, who are now managed by former Sons player Scott Agnew and has made a terrific start to life in the dugout with two wins from two.
