Match Report

THEY won't be talking about the spectacle of this game for long. But history records that Dumbarton came away from Montrose with a useful point.

On a day when everybody in League One except Peterhead and Alloa drew, it was important for Dumbarton to get some sort of result.

It may not have been the most flair-ridden afternoon, but that box was ticked.

Montrose had the wind advantage in the first half and certainly sought to make it count. Their biggest disappointment, though, was on the most important aspect of all, as they only had Craig Johnston's 24th minute opening goal to show for it.

On the balance of play in the first 45 minutes, a 1-0 half time deficit seemed almost acceptable. In the end, it was better than that.

Joshua Oyinsan sent the teams down the tunnel level after finishing off a low ball in from the right, and anticipation grew higher for the second half.

But despite Dumbarton having the wind advantage, the second half generally failed to live up to the first. What chances there were fell to the home side.

Fortunately, their efforts were met mostly with resistance from a determined Sons defence, which has been in decent form of late.

It is now about getting it right at the other end of the pitch, in terms of getting into scoring positions and finishing them off. It wasn't to be in this game; maybe in the important games to come.

The second half looked set to pass by without incident, but there was one more bit of drama in injury time.

Paul Watson did not react well to a challenge on him by Stuart Carswell, and having only been on the pitch for seven minutes, the Montrose sub was sent off.

He was joined indoors slightly early by his coach Iain Campbell, who was also dismissed for his protests.

The defensive effort also kept Montrose out to some extent in the first half. A ball in from the right caused some panic, but Paul Paton eventually saw the danger clear.

But the warning was not heeded, and Johnston had the opening goal when he put away a cross from the same side of the field.

Had Blair Lyons found the net instead of the post with a shot a few minutes later, this could have been a very long afternoon. He did find the post, though, and Sons escaped.

The later stages of the first half saw more promising play going forward from Dumbarton, but Gregg Wylde's shot dropped just off target.

There was better luck, though, when Oyinsan finished off a fine team move from 12 yards to level. It wasn't quite out of nothing but it hadn't exactly looked imminent for much of the half.

Now the second half was an opportunity to use the elements. Only it didn't work out that way.

Indeed, the post rescued Dumbarton again in the early stages of the second half, Aidan Quinn finding the woodwork after meeting a free kick.

After Paddy Boyle took a Montrose shot flush in the face to prevent another opportunity, Oyinsan had a go from close range after a neat move, but the keeper gathered.

The Sons defence were making a reasonable claim for overtime in the second half, but were doing their job. Despite almost total control of proceedings Montrose struggled to get close enough to goal.

With nine minutes left, Johnston almost had his and his team's second, but Kieran Wright, on his debut, was equal to it.

And that was largely it, apart from the full and frank discussion in injury time which started after Carswell clipped Watson in midfield as Montrose looked to break.

He was booked, but Watson's reaction earned him a different colour of card, and his coach received the same on the assistant referee's say-so.
