Match Report

This probably wasn't how Stevie Farrell envisaged his Dumbarton debut. Missing six key players through a mixture of injury and isolation, the new gaffer was able to name just two outfield substitutes in his matchday squad - with 17-year-old Callum Wilson and 19-year-old Sam Muir handed senior debuts in the starting line-up.

Despite the scoreline there will have been much to please the new man in the dugout, as the patched up Sons impressed in spells against a side tipped for the League Two title. This difficult competitive debut almost got off to a nightmare start, with the post denying former Son Robert Thomson from close range after a looping James Lyon shot had caught the Dumbarton rearguard cold.

Sons hit back and Ross Maclean was unfortunate to see a 25-yard clip narrowly miss the target with Ryan Marshall stranded, before they passed up a golden chance to take the lead. Then neat play from captain Stuart Carswell led to two former Warriors combining as David Hopkirk rolled the ball across the penalty box for Conner Duthie - but the ball bobbled underneath the winger and he lashed his shot high into the car park.

A breathless first-half continued with chances at both ends. A last ditch Ryan McGeever tackle denied Thomson as he attempted to burst in on goal, before Sons debutant Sam Muir saw a long range effort fly wide of Marshall's post after a fast Conner Duthie led counter-attack.

David Hopkirk was then tripped by Michael Anderson right on the edge of the area as he sprinted clear of the Stenhousemuir defence. From the resulting free-kick Duthie's delivery was tee'd off by Andy Geggan to Ross Maclean, and the former Motherwell man bent a wonderful effort beyond Marshall and into the net at the far post. The Sons could've doubled their lead soon after as the lively Duthie got beyond BJ Coll before unleashing a fierce effort that was beaten away by Marshall.

Marshall was back in action early in the second-half too. Neat play from Eoghan Stokes and David Hopkirk sent goalscorer Maclean in on goal, but he was denied by the legs of the former BSC Glasgow man from a tight angle. As the game reached the hour mark - and boosted by a switch in full-backs - it was the Warriors who started to take control of the game.

A moment of magic drew the Warriors level 63 minutes in however, as James Lyons moved beyond Ryan McGeever's challenge and curled a glorious effort high beyond Sam Ramsbottom and into the net. And Thomson made sure that he didn't dwell on his missed chances, as he scored what proved to be the winner with 10 minutes remaining.

Adam Brown's cross was perfect for the big striker, who escaped the attentions of Sam Muir and nodded the ball beyond Ramsbottom via the crossbar.
