Match Report

SHALL we just mark this game as 'ditto'?

Dumbarton were at home again. They worked hard again. They maybe were short of breaks again.

They lost the only goal of the game again. They didn't threaten to score enough again. They lost again.

Just like the previous home outing against Peterhead, this game was also decided by an ex-Sons player. Ally Roy scored the only goal of the game with 12 minutes remaining to strike another hammer blow.

It is tough to watch so much effort being extended by Dumbarton for so little reward. But an eighth blank sheet in 13 league games doesn't make much of a case for more.

James Wallace forced the first save of the night on 16 minutes after Sam Wardrop's throw was flicked on at the front post, but the keeper was equal to his effort.

He then launched the ball downfield and prompted a spell of pressure from Airdrie which came to nothing more than a couple of corners in quick succession.

Twelve minutes from half time a fierce shot from Ruaridh Langan just cleared the bar – arguably the closest the ball got to entering either goal in the first half.

There really wasn't a lot to report at half time. Plenty of effort as usual, but neither goalkeeper really given much to think about.

Sam Ramsbottom's first save of the night was on the hour mark, denying Leon McCann. After the ball travelled downfield, Jaime Wilson had the ball in the net, but his effort was ruled out for a foul on the keeper which he was booked for.

It wasn't for the want of trying, but there really wasn't a lot happening in front of either goal. The teams looked to freshen things up with changes but neither was testing the opposition keeper much.

That was until Craig Thomson put in a brilliant cross from the right which found Roy steaming in to head home at the back post.

Kyle Connell almost made it two a couple of minutes later but dragged his shot across goal and wide after running in. Sons were done.

And without laying a glove on Airdrie in what remained of the game, more vital points passed them by.

In injury time, the referee somehow managed to see an off the ball flashpoint involving Ross Forbes, and sent him off.
