Match Report

THIS was a story revolving around that old cliché 'a game of two halves' and a series of disallowed goals for the visitors.

I may have seen Dumbarton net four times in a game and end up with one given, but at the moment, I can't recall it. As the Gaffer said in his post match interview, you have to respectthe referee's decisions, even if you don't agree with them.

After early pressure from East Fife in the opening period, Sons were the first to produce a gilt edged chance to open the scoring. Jaime Wilson out ran the home defence and slotted home only for the goal to be disallowed (this will be a recurring theme of this report) for offside.

As invariably happens in football, it was then East Fife who opened the scoring and after a club record of three consecutive clean sheets to open the league campaign, it was the simplest of goals to concede. On 17 minutes, Kevin Smith lofted a cross from the left over the heads of the entire Sons defence. It found Jack Hamilton at the far post in splendid isolation and he headed it back across goal into the corner of the net.

Sons then battled to get the equaliser, but it wasn't until the 43rd minute that either goal was seriously threatened. In a carbon copy of his earlier effort, Wilson beat the offside trap but this time his shot flashed past Jordan Hart's left hand post.

While East Fife had the better of the first half, Sons came out for the second 45 determined to get on level terms and the first chance arrived after only three minutes. Chris Hamilton fired in a cross and Ross Forbes headed over. It was all Sons now and on 50 minutes Adam Frizzell netted from a great Forbes cross but it was ruled out for an 'infringement'.

Seven minutes later, it was Forbes again in on the action, just failing to get on the end of yet another cross from Hamilton. When Sons did eventually level, with no infringement in sight, it was Forbes again involved in the action. His powerful free-kick was parried by Hart and Wilson was first to the ball to net the equaliser.

Having been completely outplayed in the second half, East Fife then took the lead again against the run of play. On 68 minutes, Ryan Wallace brought the ball down well and turned to volley home from six yards from what the Sons defence claimed was an offside position but no infringement was seen and the goal stood.

Five minutes from the end, Denny Johnstone, on as a sub for an injured Rico Quitongo, powerfully headed home a wonderful effort, but it was ruled out for an infringement.
