Match Report

DURING half time, with a mundane contest all square, the tunes being played over the tannoy could hardly have seemed more apt.

'Against All Odds' followed by 'Living On A Prayer'.

At the time, Dumbarton were still in the position that they hoped they'd be in for only a week.

But it took only one inspired swing of the boot against Stenhousemuir to get them away from there. Well, that and a bit of luck.

The teams had traded penalty conversions through Ross Forbes and Mark McGuigan in a lacklustre first half before Dom Thomas went for goal from distance on 56 minutes.

Even within a month, he's already shown that when he goes for goal, he finds it. And he did, from all of 25 yards.

Maybe earlier this season, McGuigan would have rescued a point for Stenny. He had the pick of their chances with six minutes left, but Ross Forbes increased his case to play left back by clearing off the line.

So McGuigan did not equalise and Dumbarton got the three points. In the situation they started the game in, the performance is neither here nor there. The result is the beginning and the end of it all.

It is now on to Forfar to see if, at the second time of asking, a home win can be followed by another victory on the road.

Iain Russell missed from close range early doors before McGuigan looked set to meet a cross at the back post for a certain goal. Fortunately, Cammy Ballantyne's overhead kick kept him from reaching it.

On 22 minutes the first penalty came when Mark Ferry was punished for handling Thomas' shot in the area. Forbes' penalty reached its target - just.

But 10 minutes later, another Stenny cross was defended unconvincingly and Ballantyne's efforts to stop McGuigan resulted in another handball. The visiting striker scored the penalty to equalise.

Calum Gallagher and then Ballantyne missed early second half opportunities before Thomas controlled the ball 25 yards out. Ordinarily there would be little danger, but he is capable of making the extraordinary happen, and did just that.

Five minutes later he was a bit closer to goal, but fired over. And then it was time to knuckle down.

Ferry missed the target with a bending shot before Kevin O'Hara's stabbed shot rolled through to Chris Smith.

Then a passing move looked like it had set McGuigan up to score a second time, but Forbes had other ideas.

Job, in somewhat more nervous fashion than hoped for, done.
