Match Report

IT was a game which will go down in history. A managerial tenure which lasted literally one game.

Ian Durrant was kind enough to take interim charge of Dumbarton against Arbroath. Unfortunately, his stint ended with a nought per cent record – played one, lost one.

All looked well at half time. A 1-0 lead courtesy of Iain Russell's goal on 15 minutes was the least Sons deserved.

But it was gained with the wind advantage, and with the league leaders enjoying that benefit in the second half, one goal was never likely to be enough.

Realistically, as soon as Ryan Wallace equalised on the hour mark, only one team was going to win. They did, with further goals from Steven Doris and Gavin Swankie.

By the end of it, three more points had been added to the ones cost to Dumbarton by mistakes. It was harsh after a positive first half, but when you're in Sons' position, things generally aren't fair.

Russell put them ahead by snapping up the loose ball when the home keeper could only parry Dom Thomas' shot from the edge of the area.

After a great challenge by Cammy Ballantyne prevented Michael McKenna from sending Bobby Linn clear, Thomas bent a shot wide from a decent position.

Arbroath stepped things up in the later first half, but Linn's shot was deflected wide, and Colin Hamilton shot past from the resulting corner.

On 58 minutes, Thomas looked to have set up Russell for a second goal, but after the keeper blocked at close range, it was followed by a rabble rather than a scramble, with the outcome a free kick to Arbroath.

Then two minutes later, Wallace bent the ball home at the far post. A game which could have been 2-0 was instead 1-1.

After Thomas shot wide when he cut into the area, there was more frustration. On 74 minutes Doris headed home Hamilton's cross to give Arbroath the lead.

Then three minutes later, Swankie's shot hit Robbie Mutch's outstretched leg and trundled into the net.

Wallace and Hamilton tried to use the wind to their advantage, each forcing Mutch into a save with a 40-yard free kick.

By this point, you'd be lucky to find anybody from Dumbarton who was that bothered. For the fourth time already this season, they had scored first away from home and failed to win.

Within hours, though, the Jim Duffy era was beginning.
