Match Report

THE ambitions for this group were simple. So far they're being met.

Dumbarton's last two games in their Betfred Cup section, against Kilmarnock and St Mirren, are tall orders. They're fixtures where your aspiration is simply to give as good an account of yourself as possible, even if it doesn't bring a result.

Which makes the first two outings, where Sons are the divisionally superior side, more important.

And after five points out of six from Spartans and Queen's Park, it is fair to say things are going to plan so far.

But this win over the Spiders was no mean feat. It required graft, craft and one moment of inspiration from Calum Gallagher on 33 minutes.

It was a game which, on another day, would have seen Sons well clear at half time. Chances came and went and there were very odd occasions where it looked like they might be regretted.

They weren't, and after five points and clean sheets, it is almost as positive a start to the group as Dumbarton could hope for.

Their start to this game, though, took its time. Indeed, the first chance fell to Queens' Adam Martin, who headed a cross wide at the near post.

But the 21st minute was the start of a series of opportunities which eventually paid off. After Andy Little's shot was deflected wide, Andy Dowie's header was also off target.

Gallagher then went for it from 20 yards, but the keeper touched his shot past. From the resulting corner, Craig Barr's header was deflected wide, and from THAT resulting corner, the centre half's next header was saved.

Stuart Carswell also had a shot saved before the pressure was rewarded. A corner by Ross Forbes was headed by Barr, and fell to Gallagher to finish.

Just before half time, some rare slackness at the back found Ewan MacPherson well placed for the visitors, but Grant Adam saved.

Right at the start of the second half, Michael Paton tried a shot from distance, but it was just the wrong side of the post.

The second half was not to be as productive from Sons going forward, and on 58 minutes Josh Peters was played in for Queens but shot across goal and wide.

A 30-yard effort on the turn by Forbes just missed the target before things became very stuffy, with not much going on. In injury time Iain Russell almost sealed it, but the keeper stopped his angled drive from close range.

After a successful start to Group H, Dumbarton were able to prepare for a different test.
