Match Report

OF the three competitions Dumbarton were still in going into this game, this was probably the lowest priority.

Realistically they weren't going to win the William Hill Scottish Cup. They are right in contention for the Irn Bru Cup and it is still all to play for in the battle for survival in the Championship.

So the good news is that no damage was done for those other two contests.

The bad news? Just about everything else.

Sons were well beaten in this last 16 tie by a Morton side who were superior by the length, never mind the width, of the Clyde.

Frank Ross opened the scoring in 12 minutes and second half goals by Jack Iredale and Bob McHugh made it even more convincing for the home side.

It could have been worse for a Dumbarton side who were hoping for some improvement on the dispiriting previous outing, at Livingston a fortnight ago, if nothing else.

And unless you were one of the diehards who travelled to Peterhead in midweek, you still have not been there to see Dumbarton score in 2018.

It is still very much all to play for in the two remaining competitions, but that, and other elements, is still in need of drastic change.

Ross served notice of intent early on when his shot from Gary Oliver's assist was straight at Scott Gallacher.

Instead the two players combined on 12 minutes, with Ross finishing from a narrow angle after an exchange of passes.

Within 10 minutes, Dumbarton could have conceded another two. On 15 minutes Andy Murdoch gained control of a through ball, but dragged his shot wide.

Then Gallacher did well to deny Scott Tiffoney after the home forward was given a free shot at goal.

Around the half hour mark Sons found some sort of form going forward, with Iain Russell just unable to get to Dimitris Froxylias' low ball. He then headed Tom Walsh's cross just past.

But Ross and Thomas O'Ware were off target with further chances for Morton, who would have headed in at half time feeling they should have been out of sight.

They needn't have been too frustrated as their lead was doubled four minutes after the restart. Gallacher's hand glanced Oliver's shot away from goal, but the ball fell to Iredale for an easy finish.

Ross and McHugh had further chances, but the first went over while Gallacher brilliantly saved the second.

But he could do nothing with 10 minutes left when a short corner was worked into the area and McHugh finished from close range.

Sons had been completely dominated but Craig Barr was denied a late consolation when his header was saved.

On to Oswestry.
