Match Report

THERE'S no point in elaborating on it. The scoreline says it all.

Dumbarton - the same Dumbarton who dug in and battled for a hard-earned point against Falkirk last week - went into a six-goal meltdown on a sunny afternoon at Queen of the South.

Derek Lyle and Alex Harris each scored twice, with Darren Brownlie topping the scoring and Iain Russell tailing it.

The score really does the game justice. Sons were unable to test the home goalkeeper at any point in the afternoon, while after a fairly promising opening on the defensive side, Queens eventually filled their boots.

It could all have started on four minutes when Gary Oliver's low ball found Harris six yards out, only for the midfielder to hit the post.

There was little sign of the mayhem to follow as Sons spent the first half hour defending well. All there really was to trouble Jamie Ewings was a Dale Hilson shot which trundled through to him.

But on 33 minutes, Brownlie rose highest to head home a corner from the right.

There was a response in the form of Calum Waters' 25-yard free kick which finished just the wrong side of the post.

After that, things went downhill at a rate of knots.

Queens doubled their lead two minutes from half time when Sons missed opportunities to clear a corner and Lyle thrashed the ball home.

The next goal, after the restart, was vital. It came after 52 minutes for the home side, who had 10 men at the time as Brownlie was off the pitch receiving treatment.

His team mates piled forward on the counter attack and after Oliver's shot was saved, Lyle had an easy task in putting away his second.

He looked to have sealed his hat-trick 10 minutes later, but a handling offence spared Sons a 4-0 deficit - for all of five minutes.

Again Queens had 10 men due to another enforced absence for Brownlie. This time Harris' shot from the edge of the area was deflected into the net.

It was 5-0 after 74 minutes when Queens again passed their way through Sons' defence and Harris posted his second.

And with six minutes left, Russell was put through to slide home his team's sixth.
