Match Report

TUESDAY'S game with Alloa was always going to be important for Dumbarton.

But now it's the first of 10 that just got a whole lot more crucial.

The trip to Livingston saw an opportunity missed to pull clear of the bottom two as Sons lost in West Lothian for the first time in six visits.

Failure to score when they dominated in the game's early stages proved to be their downfall. Chances were not converted and Liam Buchanan inflicted punishment on 29 minutes.

The man who later replaced Buchanan, Jordan White, needed just six minutes to seal a 2-0 win for Livi after 84.

Had it been Sons taking the points, they would have been seven points clear of their hosts with two games in hand.

Instead the gap was reduced to one point and while Dumbarton are still in the more powerful position, this result turned up the heat.

The chance is there to immediately make up for it on Tuesday in the rescheduled home game with Alloa.

Sons were on top of the early stages but it wasn't until 17 minutes that they first threated, when Tom Walsh's narrow angled effort was turned wide.

Gregor Buchanan also headed Calum Waters' corner narrowly wide, but it was his namesake in a Livingston jersey who got the game's opening goal.

A long ball forward was not cleared and when the ball broke to Buchanan, he ran in to scramble the ball home.

In all of their last five visits to Livingston, Sons had conceded first and still not lost, so everything was still to play for.

They certainly responded to some extent, as Waters sent in a long range shot which was palmed away and cleared while Walsh had another effort saved.

But Livi threatened a second just before half time when Sam Stanton charged down a clearance and ran in on goal only for Jamie Ewings to save at close range.

The second half saw the home side in more control as Sons toiled. Stanton's shot from distance was turned wide while Josh Mullin fired across goal with no takers.

When Sons did get close to scoring, it was through Jordan Kirkpatrick's 30-yard free kick, which was saved.

Six minutes from full time it was effectively over as a contest after the Livi keeper sent the ball in White's direction. He brought it under control and ran in to slide it past Ewings.

Darren Barr was close to getting one back for Sons a couple of minutes later, but his shot was saved at close range. In the ensuing scramble, the referee chose to ignore appeals for a foul on Kirkpatrick in the area.
