Match Report

THEY say that genius is 99 per cent perspiration and one per cent inspiration.

Which is probably true of this game. There was plenty hard work from both Dumbarton and Raith Rovers. All 22 men on the pitch knuckled down and none of them dodged a challenge.

What they lacked was inspiration. Enough of it to find the net, or for most of the afternoon, look like doing so.

Sons will be the happier team with a point than their hosts will be for all sorts of reasons.

From the blow they were handed through keeper Mark Brown's absence to a second half scramble where Raith somehow failed to hit the net, there were points where this game could have been lost.

But deputy Jamie Ewings did everything that could have been asked of him and together with a solid defence, saw off Raith's efforts even in the most trying circumstances.

It led to a result which was well-received by the fans, who would have included late chief executive Gilbert Lawrie, to whom a minute's applause was dedicated before the game.

The Kirkcaldy side made more headway early on, with James Craigen firing off target when well placed before Ewings saved with his legs from Mark Stewart.

Home debutant Aidan Connolly also sent in an effort which went over off the top of the bar.

However, Sons made some progress around the first half's midway point as Frazer Wright's header was cleared off the line by Ross Callachan. Wright then tried again from the edge of the area after Raith only half cleared, but his finish was wide.

The same could be said of Kevin Cawley's shot from the corner of the area right on half time, following a scrappy ending to the first half.

Shooting towards their own fans in the second half, Raith went close through loan signing Louis Longridge, who was then at the centre of an incredible incident after 52 minutes.

When Connolly cut the ball back, his initial target Stewart miskicked. The loose ball fell to Longridge, whose efforts were twice blocked before the ball was scrambled clear.

After Iain Davidson only found the side netting with a narrow angled shot, it got scrappy again. There was no lack of effort, but neither side was looking like scoring until late in the afternoon.

Tom Walsh, making his Sons debut, was unlucky with a low angled shot after Jamie Lindsay played him in.

Callachan then watched Ewings punch his 30-yard free kick away for a corner in another goalmouth scramble.

Grant Anderson's shot caused this one, but Mark Docherty got behind it. It may have left the defender dazed - but he kept his team's clean sheet.

Scott Taggart looked to set up a last gasp winner for Sons, but there were no takers and an emotional week for all at the club ended with a decent point.
