Match Report

SO, here we are at the end of the big sequence.

And not only have Dumbarton taken seven points out of nine from the teams around them. They've shown they have the grit.

After six points out of six from Alloa Athletic and St Mirren, they had a cushion ahead of the trip to Livingston.

Which seemed just as well for much of the afternoon, as Scott Pittman's goal for the home side looked likely to be the only one of the game.

But this is a Sons side for whom resilience was a big part of beating St Mirren. And with two minutes remaining, the battling qualities secured a result again.

Stephen Saunders turned to scramble home the equaliser towards the end of a second half where Sons dominated, but struggled to look like scoring.

By close of play on Boxing Day, when Livingston will have visited St Mirren, all of the Ladbrokes SPFL Championship's bottom four will have played each other in December.

Whatever happens in Paisley, Dumbarton's tally of seven points from the three game mini-league cannot be matched.

This was a spell which was always likely to dictate their season. They've come out of it well.

However, Livingston were the quicker to get started in this match. After only two minutes the ball fell to Jordyn Sheerin in front of a gaping goal, but he shot over.

The opening goal was not long in coming for the home side, though. A slack concession of the ball by Sons in their own area after 14 minutes resulted in Jordan White squaring to Pittman for a simple tap-in.

There were few chances, but the best of Sons' opportunities were coming from crosses from the left by Mark Docherty.

Within a few minutes of each other, Kevin Cawley and Donald McCallum went close from the midfielder's assists, but neither hit the target.

There was also an appeal for a penalty when Frazer Wright seemed to be clipped in the area, but nothing was doing.

The second half saw Dumbarton geared up for battle once again, but with little end product against a strong home defence.

On the hour mark Jon Routledge crossed for Wright, but the defender's header was turned over the bar.

Livi could have sealed it with nine minutes remaining, but Pittman missed out on a double after heading Danny Mullen's cross wide at point blank range.

And that proved crucial. Jordan Kirkpatrick was close to inflicting punishment, but his shot was deflected past.

Docherty again tried to score from the resulting corner, having scored with a similar trick at Alloa a fortnight before.

This time his shot hit the post, but in the resulting scramble Saunders swivelled, shot and scored.

One point could yet have become none, but in injury time, Mark Brown made a fine save to keep out Gary Glen as White waited to pounce on any loose ball.

In the end, a draw was a fair result. And in Dumbarton's case, it was certainly a good one.
