Match Report

NEITHER side could find a breakthrough in an even yet ragged goalless encounter between Dumbarton and Cowdenbeath at the Rock.

Sons started with a sense of determination, but then lost momentum, finding themselves pushed back as the first half proceeded.

Both sides had their chances. Garry Fleming, Jordan Kirkpatrick and Mark Gilhaney all came fairly close to putting the home side ahead.

Early on there was a great flick from Fleming to set up Archie Campbell, but the ball just got away from him.

Then Fleming picked the ball up before shooting for goal, but his powerful effort was saved.

There was a penalty shout for Sons when Campbell looked to have been pushed down in the area. There was certainly contact, but not enough for a spot-kick.

Jordan Kirkpatrick shot wide after good build-up play from Dumbarton in the middle of the park.

Cowden produced a series of good moves and looked more threatening, but Kudus Oyenuga could not match speed and invention with crisp finishing or a decent final pass.

First he had a shot saved at the second attempt by Sons 'keeper Danny Rogers.

Another attempt for the visitors came when Jon Robertson was also denied by Rogers, this time after Cowden had broken from a Dumbarton long throw.

At the other end, Fleming and Gilhaney both had shots blocked in quick succession.

The pendulum then swung in Cowedenbeath's direction, with the away side piling on the pressure and coming close just before half time when a corner was headed just wide.

After an initial flurry of activity the match had quietened down significantly for the last twenty minutes of the first half.

It remained a somewhat disappointing affair immediately after the break, before picking up pace in the final half hour.

Sons struggled to find a way forward, and the match started to become one-way traffic in the wrong direction.

Rogers came up with another important save for Dumbarton when he beat away a dangerous effort from Sean Higgins.

Jordan Kirkpatrick tested Cowdenbeath 'keeper Robbie Thomson from range on the hour, before being replaced up front by Colin Nish.

By this stage the game had picked up again for the home side, with some good one-touch football in midfield.

Archie Campbell came agonisingly close for Dumbarton on 75 minutes, as Mark Gilhaney put him through only to see the ball deflected away at the last moment.

Sons were definitely let off the hook as Oyunega fired over the bar with just Rogers to beat on 80 minutes.

In the end neither side could find a way through and had to be satisfied with a point each.

Scott Taggart was named Sonstrust Man of the Match by match sponsor David Richardson.
