Match Report

DUMBARTON put their recent poor form behind them with a convincing 2-0 victory against Forfar Athletic at sun-drenched Station Park.

Goals from David Winters, who was later to be shown a red-card and a Bryan Prunty strike ensured that three welcome points could safely be tucked into the kit-bag for the long journey home.

Manager Alan Adamson was full of praise for his team.

He said:”It was a very professional performance from us and against a team who had been flying high.

“I thought we controlled the game and we were rarely in trouble and that includes the wee spell we had to endure after David was sent off.

“It was doubly pleasing to record a clean sheet, so credit to our defence who looked solid all afternoon.”

The gaffer made several changes to his starting line up for this match including the return of Stephen Grindlay as No 1. Paul Nugent played at right-back and on-loan Ross McKinnon was pushed forward into a wide midfield role allowing James Creaney to re-claim his left-back slot.

The alterations had an immediate effect and Sons really should have gone in front after 15 minutes. A goalmouth scramble at the home end saw no fewer than three Dumbarton players had shots cleared off the line and a goal at this point would have been a fair reflection of the away team's dominance.

Although the stramash saw Prunty push the ball over the line, it was rightly ruled offside by the linesman.

Sons suffered a blow on 29 minutes when the lively Pat Walker had to be taken off with a nasty ankle injury, however his replacement, David Winters made an immediate impact.

Collecting a free-kick from Scott Agnew, the striker expertly dispatched a low drive beyond McHugh in the Forfar goal to give Dumbarton a deserved lead.

Dumbarton started the second half with an early chance that fell to Gilhaney, but his daisy cutter, which had McHugh well beaten just missed the far post with several fans and officials already celebrating a goal that never was!

However, the ex-Dundee man, who was having an excellent game, set up the killer second goal for Prunty on the hour mark.

His feed to the in-form hitman was inch perfect for Prunty to fire home his sixth goal of the campaign and effectively seal the points for Sons.

The drama wasn't over though when Winters saw red after raising his hands to Forfar's Nick Low with fifteen minutes remaining.

But resolute defending and a willingness to fight for every ball and tackle ensued that the small and enthusiastic Sons support travelled home happy.

Striker Bryan Prunty remarked: “It was a great result for us and the fans were just brilliant. The support we get on our travels is really appreciated with encouragement from everyone.”
