Match Report

DUMBARTON still can't get the better of Morton in a cup tie after losing the Scottish Cup third round tie 2-1.

Despite Andy Geggan heading the opener, a Brian Graham double had the Greenock club heading through to join the big guns in round four.

That was despite the sending off of David McGregor for two bookings in quick succession with 11 minutes left.

This was the fifth time the sides have met on cup business in the last two seasons, including last season's Scottish Cup replay.

Sons interim manager Alan Adamson said: "I am disappointed as I thought we controlled the first half and were the better team. We had a great chance to go 2-0 up and you couldn't have seen any way back for Morton had we taken it. As it was, they were probably the better side over the piece."

After seven minutes, Kieran Brannan's shot from Craig McLeish's high ball was over, but the opener came just three minutes later.

Geggan was first to Alan Cook's corner and powered the ball home with his head.

After 19 minutes, Jon McShane headed wide from Brannan's cross, while at the other end, Stephen Grindlay dealt with two efforts by Derek Young.

Brannan's solo run ended with a shot from distance which was saved before two incidents in quick succession which changed the game.

Four minutes from half time, Ross Campbell latched on to Nicky Devlin's through ball with only the keeper to beat, but his effort was deflected wide.

From the resulting corner, Morton broke upfield and Graeme Holmes' ball to the back post left Graham with a simple headed finish.

Three minutes into the second half, Graham completed the turnaround when Sons failed to clear a low ball and he snapped up the opportunity.

Grindlay then saved well from Kean, while the Morton keeper did well to turn McShane's free kick over.

McShane's header was then wide before Alan Cook's shot from a narrow angle went wide.

McGregor then headed for an early bath after fouling McShane for his second booking.

However, Morton were in control by this point, and Graham was only denied a hat-trick by a shot which went wide after he turned the defence.
